Who knew

Lets face the facts here, I have a whiny baby. Love the little guy to death, LOVE him, but he's a baby, and he cries, or at least whines, a lot...at least at night. I blame it on his bad gas. It's in his genes...both sides. Sick! Ha, the poor kid, he's doomed! Moving on...I'm sure he's in pain a good portion of the time, and pain equals tears, right? It is what it is. We manage around here, and I think things are getting better. Knock on wood.

It's either the gas, or being overly tried 99.9 precent of the time. He hates sleeping. At least that's my theory. He'll dose off only to realize what he's doing and be wide eyed two seconds later, forgetting sleep all together. He fights it. Big time. Stubborn? Maybe. Does that mean he's taking after me? We only hope not.

I've yet to be annoyed by any of this, meaning, I've yet to have my own emotional breakdown, or throw up my hands in defeat. Mostly, I just feel bad for the little guy. But he's just so cute, half of the time I don't care if he's all smiles or all tears, I'm just glad he's mine and that we get to hang out all day long, everyday. Love the kid to death.

Today, while hanging out with a friend, she mentioned something to me about the five words babies say to communicate to us, she couldn't remember what they were, but said it was on the Oprah show once upon a time. So, what did I do, I whipped my phone right out and began googling what in the world she was talking about. And low and behold, THIS is what she was referring to:

Since about 4pm this afternoon after watching this clip, until now, I feel like I all of a sudden have a new way of looking at my sweet little whiny boy. Oh, he's hungry. It's the gas! Aw, yes, you ARE tired, STOP fighting it. etc. etc. Those are just a few of the things I've found myself saying since this afternoon. I swear my life just changed for the better. But, sadly enough, he's usually telling me the gas is giving him a run for the money. Like I said before, the poor boy, he's totally doomed!

Am I the only one that has never heard of this before? Probably. But it's genius, and I honestly feel like things are going to be SO much better now that I can speak, er, understand, baby talk. Don't worry little guy, we're on the same page now, it's going to be OK...and I say this while my child, who hasn't slept since 4pm this afternoon (it's now 10:40pm, and trust me, I've TRIED to get him to sleep) is wide awake, with no sign of sleep in the near future, none whatsoever! Oh, bless this sweet baby of mine, he loves to keep life exciting.

Your life sounds very similar to mine when I had Easton (it's the running I tell you...) with one exception: I totally had mental/emotional breakdowns...daily. So way to go for not getting bothered by it! I tried everything...but what it really came down to was....he grew out of it...Got on a good sleep schedule and life was fine. I did find some help from the happiest baby on the block. it's a book. But sounds like you've got the perfect personality for a fussy baby!

one more thing that really helped me....i'm sure you've had plenty of advice....but here's one last piece (from the book, healthy sleep habits, happy child) a new born can only be awake for two hours MAX, before they become overtired and have trouble falling asleep. So watch the clock, and if preston is getting fussy and he's been awake for an hour or so, chances are he's tired. If you can get him to sleep within this window, things will be easier...easier said, than done, I'm sure!!

I just watched that entire video. Interesting. We'll see if it works with Liv.

I second the comments about Healthy Sleep Habits. Livy actually can only be awake for about 45 minutes in the morning before she wigs out. I knew from the book it was 2 hours max. But that means MAX. Otherwise she's awake for 4 hours and 1 or 2 of those hours are screaming. It's not pretty.

I remember seeing that before I had kids and thought it was a joke. Two kids later, I am a believer that this lady knew what she was talking about. I know you didn't ask for ANY advice or tips on this post, but I will throw it out anyway. First of all, I third the book. I actually used two. Happiest Baby on the Block and Happy Baby. Also, both of my girls were so gassy and fussy. I got them tested (Well, their poop) and found the had dairy allergies. As much as it sucked, I went off of all dairy products and it made a ton of difference. Anyway, don't feel like you have to rush off and get him tested now...just something that we did and it really helped our situtation. Sucked for me, but was great for the girls. Good luck! Ada was super fussy and it was hard sometimes.

I'd never heard of this, but it makes complete sense. I'll have to ask my friends if they've noticed it.

Yes I agree with keeping them awake for only about an hour. For Braden, it was swaddling him up tight, covering his face, bouncing on the exercise ball, and shushing. Thank goodness for DVR! Just adding my two cents - again :) Love this Oprah clip!

Forgot to add - along with bouncing and shushing, add the bum patting as well. Braden liked to be cradled, Allie prefers to be up on my shoulder. :) Ok, I'm done.

Cool video clip. Tate was our fussiest/gassiest baby, and we had to do a lot of belly rubbing and leg bending to help relieve his pains. I believe that the fussiest times for all of our babies was from about 5-9 weeks old, and I also agree that when we watched the clock and made sure our baby got his next nap before being awake 2 full hours, they were very grateful!

I so wish I could hold your little Preston...
